Why You Shouldn’t Put Your Laptop on Your Lap?

Keeping a laptop on the knee for a long time may be harmful to health, and overheating the computer may cause skin burns and discomfort; And this usage often leads to poor posture, causing neck fatigue and hunchback, which can lead to long-term back, shoulder, and neck pain, as well as other musculoskeletal problems.

We are all familiar with this scene: comfortably lying on the sofa, laptop on the thigh, music gently playing in the background. Many people spend most of their time in front of laptops. The portability of laptops makes work easier. However, you may not know that this seemingly warm image actually contains some health issues.

Overheating issue
Laptops, due to their enclosed structure and powerful processors, can generate a large amount of heat. These calories are usually dissipated through the bottom of a laptop. Although the heat is not sufficient to cause dangerous burns, prolonged exposure can still burn the skin, a condition known as Erythema Ignitis (EAI) or more commonly known as Burn Skin Syndrome. This situation occurs in the form of skin spots or rashes, and in extreme cases, it can even cause burns.

Posture issues
Laptops and computers must be ideally placed at eye level so that you can maintain a straight back and relaxed shoulders while using them. Placing your laptop in a lower position on your knees will force you to hunch and disrupt your natural posture. This may lead to back pain and pressure on the shoulders and neck.

Radiation issues
Although controlling usage is crucial to ensuring safe radiation levels, placing a laptop on the knee can actually increase the body’s exposure to EMF radiation, which is caused by the electronic operation and wireless communication capabilities of the device. Although the radiation generated by the computer is low, any electronic device connected to Wi-Fi will generate electromagnetic fields. Therefore, especially for pregnant women, it is best to reduce the contact between the device and the body.

It’s not easy to break the habit of placing your knees on a laptop desk. If you really need to place your laptop on your lap, a laptop desk is the simplest solution, especially if you need to work from home – such as on the sofa or in bed – with a high-quality laptop desk, not only can it provide a layer of protection between the laptop and the knee, but it can also improve posture and maximize the protection of our health.
