What is MDF?
MDF, (Medium-density fibreboard) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming it into panels by applying high temperature and pressure.
MDF is typically made up of 82% wood fibre, 9% urea-formaldehyde resin glue, 8% water, and 1% paraffin wax.
MDF has a typical density of 600–800 kg/m3 or 0.022–0.029 lb/in3, in contrast to particle board (500–800 kg/m3) and to high-density fibreboard (600–1,450 kg/m3).
What is the structure of MDF?
Above is the picture of pure MDF, but we rarely see this kind of MDF in our daily life.
What we often see is like below on the top of most tables.
So, what happened? Let’s cut an edge from the MDF.
You will find there seems “coatings” on its top & bottom faces, and side edge.
What is the face material of MDF?
The coating on the top and bottom faces, we call them “Melamine Paper”, it could be made with emulational wood or stone grain as required.
You can regard Melamine as one kind of plastic. The melamine paper was made of paper impregnated with Melamine.
The feature of melamine paper
-
Water-resistant
-
Oil-resistant
-
Heat-resistant
-
Anti-corrosion
-
Wear-resistant
What is the edge material of MDF?
The side edge of MDF was banded with PVC strip with the same texture of melamine paper.
But this is what may happen if the consumer hits the edge of table by accident.
The PVC strip was glued on the edge and it will peel off sometimes.
For this problem, there’s an alternative solution to apply the PVC plastic film coating by vacuum moulding technology.
You can recognize it easily because there is no seam between the top face and side edge.
The feature of PVC plastic film coating
No peeling-off risk
Support complex shape of board edge
Advanced appearance without seam
What’s more, it will cost about 5% more than the product that applied PVC banded MDF board.
